Surfing EJMR

Z introduced me to econjobrumors.com around six months ago – which I promptly forgot about. I have taken advantage of the Lunar New Year’s Holidays to peruse through the many posts there for the first time, and had to spend at least six hours on the web to get to know all the acronyms and its general atmosphere. I did not know what ‘trolling’ was, to begin with.

Some are crude, derogatory, and outright unpleasant at times, but once you learn to filter what’s written there and distinguish serious comments from sarcasm, it seems very informative.

There is so much to consider: faculty, their recent papers, job market candidates and placements, attrition rates, available funding, utilizable letters of recommendation, … Most importantly, I don’t want to shut out opportunities, but nor do I want to oversell myself.
